Reproduction Outside of Species?

I grew up with the understanding that it was impossible to breed between different species. However I've seen this contradicted by hybrids among the four Big Cats (Lion, Tiger, Leopard and Panther) who can all crossbreed.

So, is the rule that you have to be of the same genus to reproduce and not genus? And if so, would it be possible for members of the Homo genus to have crossbred as well (i.e,. a Neanderthal and an early Modern Human)?

Thanks!

Reproduction Outside of Species?
Great question. Alot of folks define a species as a group of organisms that can interbreed. There are however examples where this definition fails. I'm not familiar with your example but if its true, there ya go.

So what is a species or for that matter a genus? These are terms that WE made up to help us begin sorting and classifying all of life. While the system is VERY useful for naming it can sometimes get us in trouble. Life doesn't conform to the definitions of our terms!

So, then what is the barrier between two organisms from reproducing? - It's GENETIC!

Durring mitosis, chromosomes are replicated and aligned along the metaphase plate. If the genome of two organisms is sufficiently similar to allow the chromosomes to align (and begin crossing over) such that each daughter cell gets an intact copy of the genome.. then the two organisms can sexually reproduce.

IF the genomes are sufficiently different and chromosomal segregation fails - then the two organisms can't have sex.

Another barrier I've thought about is binding between ZP3 and the ZP3 receptor but I don't have any data on this but someone else might.

So, answer the question already right? Could neanderthal and early homo sapians interbreed? Only if their chromosomal structure was similar enough to align and segregate properly during mitosis. Note that most of the anthropoligcal data suggests that the two groups DID interbreed.
Reply:Very cool. I'm glad you got the most votes. I didn't mean for it to go up for voting between you and everyone else.

But this goes to show that too many Yahoo! Answers users just vote for the sake of getting a point (going by how close #1 was to beating you). Report It

Reply:Ligers and Tigons (name differs depending on which parent is which) are common enough in zoos but not in the wild, but they are sufficiently common enough in captivity to know that they ARE fertile, this is probably because all members of the family have the same number of Chromosomes.

Mules are generally infertile beacuse they have an odd number of chromosmes so cannot split them equally to produce vaible sex cells., however, there is one case of a mule succesfully fertilizing a donkey but this may be due to a chromosomal "defect" in the first place.

That have also been cases in the wild of grizzly and polar bears cross-breeding.

Species are not supposed to be able to interbreed but it depends if they've evolved sufficiently to be totally distinct including on a genetic level. The common ancestor of all cats maybe only a few million years distant and therefore tIgers and lions at least are not genetically different enough as yet to not be able to have offspring together.
Reply:I think it can happen. Because if they can cross breed donkey and the horse and make ponies y cant they since the all belong to Homo
Reply:the definition of species is not so concrete as people think, however most would agree that a species must be able to reproduce .

ligres, tions, mules etc are infertile.

there are pre and post mating mechanisms which prevent these hybrids from reproducing, and this is what is meant when people say it is impossible to breed between different species.

i.e, even if the offspring of crosses are viable, they are usually not fertile.
Reply:Many plants occasionally cross with different species within the same genus (oaks, for example). Others reproduce by cloning (hawthorns, for example), so how do you apply the definition?

Some critters don't normally cross because they live in different locations and/or have different behaviors so we call them separate species. But when brought together under different conditions (say, at a zoo), they might occassionally mate and produce offspring.

That shows us that our definition of species is somewhat arbitrary, though very convenient. Some plants--and animals for that matter--may not have read the book and don't fit the definition :-).

This is consistent with our understanding of evolution. Many species have completely separated from others and there is no interbreeding at all. But some have not separated completely, or are incompletely separated, so they can cross. Varieties are populations that are somewhat distinct, but not distinct enough to be called separate species. They may become separate species in the future, but not necessarily.

Back to the oak example: oaks have separated into two main groups--the red oak group and the white oak group all in the same genus, Quercus. Members of the red oak group can hybridize within the group, and members of the white oak group can hybridize. For example, white oak and burr oak form a hybrid.

As to the question about Neanderthals, the final answer is not in, but it is certainly possible, and some anthropologists think it likely.
Reply:About natural limits, I do not know. However, the species barrier is down. It is now possible to include traits from just about anything into any other life-form.

Perhaps if that should interest you - a search for species barrier down might do the trick.
Reply:The answer is, if you have the same # of chromosomes it's likely. There are other things that matter, too, but if there are a different # of chromosomes then it's not possible. I don't know how many chromosomes all the different species have though, so I can't tell you if the homos interbred a long time ago. I know humans have 46 though.
Reply:Yes, none who qualified is prepared to mention that there are differences in the human species. Geneticists refuse to admit it because it would just cause more trouble but it will leak out, there are slightly different , well not species of humans but origins of genes , and you would be suprised who.
Reply:The traditional definition of a species specifies that they can breed within, but not outside of their group.

Of course, with the wonderful diversity we have on our beautiful planet, there are situations which stretch the rules a bit. Take for example the mule - a combination of horse and donkey, or the liger (lion and tiger) not to mention a whole array of plants...

The main thing is 'viability', and very often these species cross-over organisms are reproductively infertile, or their offspring are.

The problem when considering modern humans and Neanderthals, would be time. I think Homo Habilis and Neanderthalis cross bred, but I'm not sure.

Why equine hybrids are infertile?

hybrids such as zebroid=zebra+horse, liger=lion+tiger,mule=donkey+horse....

Why equine hybrids are infertile?
Because they have an odd number of chromosomes in their cells. In order to have fertile sex cells the chromosomes numbers have to be split in half. For example a donkey has only 60 chromosomes in a normal cell and 30 in a sex cell. A horse as 66 chromosomes in a regular cell and 33 in a sex cell. When the sex cells combine together the offspring has 63 chromosomes in the cells and the sex cells have like 31.5 chromosomes which is not a full number and therefore infertile.
Reply:Well, that is a common misconception, there are in fact female mules that become pregnant every year (just not all of them). Just this year, one herd in Colorado had like 2 or 3 mollys that were exposed to a stallion with the rest of the mares and turned up pregnant and gave birth (naturally) to viable offspring.

Also, zorse mares (zebra +horse) can have offspring that even carry on their traits and color patterns. I just saw this mare and her foal for sale in Idaho, check out the links.

Is there any way to escape an attack from...?
with a bear you just play dead but with the others i don't think there is anything you can do
Reply:ya a big rifle and a good aim
Reply:I've actually been stocked by a wolf once. I was camping waaaaaaay up north and I spotted him a few times. I don't think he wanted to do anything though. I think he just wanted to me know that he's there. If you see a wolf, it's only because it wants you to see him.

I hand raised a baby bear cub for a few weeks. But only until it was old enough to eat me.

I've never dealt with big cats before. Cats are very evil creatures. I don't trust them. I have two pet cats at home. They always have this look like if the food stops coming, I'm food.

Why people keep on dreaming about snakes?

I heard many people telling that they see snakes in their dreams at night even though they don't even think about snakes for whole day. Even for me also the same.

Why we keep dreaming on snakes when there are more dangerous animals like lion, tiger, cheetah and crocodile etc

Why people keep on dreaming about snakes?
Snake

To see a snake or be bitten by one in your dream, signifies hidden fears and worries that are threatening you. Your dream may be alerting you to something in your waking life that you are not aware of or that has not yet surfaced. The snake may also be seen as phallic and thus symbolize dangerous and forbidden sexuality. The snake may also refer to a person around you who is callous, ruthless, and can't be trusted. As a positive symbol, snakes represent transformation, knowledge and wisdom. It is indicative of self-renewal and positive changes.
Reply:Snakes are a very, very common phallic symbol.
Reply:they say when you dream about snakes someone close to you is going to die. whether or not it is true, many people believe this. Its only turned up to be coincidentally true for me once. not too long ago my aunt almost lost her baby. the night before i had a dream about a snake. maybe it was just a coincidence. i dont believe this is true. i think it is silly, but its your decision to make whethern you think this has some meaning or not.... good luck!

Which of these big Cats is not native are not native to Africa ???
Tiger.
Reply:Tigers evolved in south central China and moved to nearby areas, like Siberia, Sumatra, Indochina, and India. There are no tigers native to Africa.
Reply:Tigers are native to Asia and would not be found in Africa (except in a zoo). Interestingly, tigers and lions are very close genetically, and have been known to interbreed in captivity, producing a crossbreed called a liger. And there are lions in India--a subspecies that is smaller than the African lion, found in one national park.

Obviously humans cause the most destruction to both the planet %26amp; the animals living in it, including ourselves. If you're talking about creatures other than humans, that have caused the most human deaths, the mosquito is number one. Their trasmittance of malaria has killed more humans than any other creature.

Why are all domestic cats the same size?

Dogs range in size from the tiny lapdogs to the huge Great Dane, but all domestic cats are generally the same size, ie. about 14 inches tall.

Why is this? And if you think it is down to genetics, then why is the opposite true in the wild, where all dogs (dingo, hyena, fox) are essentially the same size, but the cats (lion, tiger, leopard, lynx, ocelot, etc) vary greatly?

In addition, what would be the impact if domestic cats were the size of big dogs? Would we be allowed to keep them as pets?

Why are all domestic cats the same size?
Domestic cats have not been bred for size traits nor have they been specialized for certain tasks like dogs. Dogs are pack animals, like their forbearers wolves. They can be trained to hunt for their owners and can become retrievers, law enforcement tools, sheep herders, guides - all tasks that don't directly benefit them. They've been bred for certain characteristics to enhance their usefulness. Consider the bulldogs, bred strictly for bull and bear baiting several hundred years ago. Or greyhounds and whippets bred for racing. Cats are not pack animals and training them is far more difficult since they require no "leader" as dogs do. The service they provided in the past was strictly pest control and no specific size was necessary for them to catch rats, mice, moles and other small vermin.

Since they've been shown at Cat Shows, they've been bred for specific looks but not for size, other than actually miniturizing some breeds.

If you've ever owned a cat, and I say "owned" with a chuckle, you'd know why we don't want them to be really large. The small ones will bite and claw even people they love on occassion because no matter how tame they are it's their nature to try to establish dominance. Imagine trying to stop a cat the size of a golden retriever from rabbiting your arm in fun. Fun for kitty but a shredded arm for the owner.
Reply:Wild cats have speciated from the original cat ancestor and adapted to live in different circumstances in different areas of the world. Domestic cats are just that - they are their own species.

Great Danes and Pekinese are still the same species and theoretically can breed together and produce viable offspring. Lions cannot breed with a housecat because they are different species. Being able to produce viable offspring is the criterion for one species to another.

Other posters have stated that it was not necessary to "alter" the housecat to increase its functionality from a human standpoint.
Reply:Well domestic cats come in all different sizes. I have a Siamese who is tiny. I also have a tabby and she is huge!! Bigger then my small dog. I know several cats that are all different sizes, It depends on the breed.

Well you are right its all about genetics because i have also seen some huge Arctic wolfs that are about 300 lbs. A lot of the wild cats are so big because of natural selection. Often the mothers will kill off the smallest baby when they are born.

I think if domestic cats were the size of say a Labrador it would be horrible because cats are unpredictable and very very dangerous. Their saliva is poisonous and cats are built for killing. Imagine how long their nails would be if they were 100lbs plus. I would be scared to go around it and it would probably eat my little dog. I still want one though.
Reply:All domestic cats are not the same size.

The maine coon is significantly larger than the siamese, etc.
Reply:I think evolution has a lot to do with it. Unlike dogs which evolved from wolves, cats evolved probably out of less of a need to scavenge. The Egyptian's kept cats probably larger than our modern cats, but which were idolised by them. Thus, as they became more domesticated, there was probably less need to be any bigger because they didn't have to hunt to kill (although the instinct is still there) and therefore didn't need to be of such a threatening size. I think Mother Nature decided that there was no need for them to be so big., so genetics comes into it as well.
Reply:Humans started using domesticated wolves to help them hunt a long time ago and then specialized them as time passed for different purposes. Cats could do what people wanted them to do, get rid of the vermin that ate their crops, without changing their size or shape. Also, if cats where really large, they could be dangerous. As for the big cats, tigers, lions, etc. they are different species and don't usually interbreed (lions and tigers being an exception) so they stay pretty much the same size throughout their species. Each species has its place in the environment and sometimes the climate helps determine their size. Cougars who live in very cold climate tend to be larger than those who live in warm climates. Siberian Tigers are much larger than Bengals who live in warmer climes.

I want to know what you think of the ones that I want. I am getting the lion, tiger, snow owl, penguin, and yellow lab. I was thinking about the cream bear but decided I didn't want something so plain. What do you think? Please no rude comments or saying I should get webkinz because I just want your opinion on what I want. Thanks in advance!!

I love the Penguin! It is sooo cute. Anyway, I personally like the Penguin, Unicorn, Pink Bear, Dragon, Yellow Lab, and the Frog. They all are so cute! Such a hard decision! But I'd have to say the Penguin is still my favorite. Hope you have a great time with your new Shining Star. I don't have one, but I do have a Webkinz. Maybe, if you ever get a Webkinz, i'll see you on there one day! Good Luck!

I'm not sure if what I believe is evolution or not?

I do believe that God created the universe. But I do believe that it is possible that certiant animals became the animals we see today. For example: I believe that it is possible the that mamoth became todays elephant. I believe it is possible that the saber tooth became one of todays wild cats (lion, tiger etc)

I do not believe I came from an ape. So what IS my belief called?

I'm not sure if what I believe is evolution or not?
It's true you did NOT come from an ape, rather we humans share a common ancestor. Sounds like evolution to me.

In lay terms, we are “cousins”.

Apes have 48 chromosomes; humans 46. Within our genetic make-up is a FUSED pair of primate chromosomes which accounts for the difference.

The genetic marker is on Human chromosome number 2, site base 114,455,823 to 114,455,838.

Reply:If you can believe all of the above, why it is such a stretch to imagine we share a common ancestor with a chimpanzee?
Reply:Have you ever thought that maybe evolutions is the way god has created, introduced, and advanced the world over millions of years?
Reply:we did not come from apes, rather we have a same ancestor....
Reply:Maybe you are a DEIST.
Reply:Those who understand evolutionary theory also don't believe we "came from an ape".
Reply:"Micro-evolution". Evoluton is not about belief it is about research and facts. The theory of Evolution is just as good as the theory of gravity. Maybe God used evolution to create life, since there is so much evidence for evolution. God bless.
Reply:It's called your personal belief on (subject)

or a personal belief.
Reply:The things you mention seem pretty obvious don't they? Look at the greater apes, is it also not obvious we are distantly related.

If you try and set aside man's perceived superiority, it will become more clear.
Reply:Ever heard the expression 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing'?

You're part of the way there if you can at least see the logic of mammoth to elephant, and sabre-tooth to big cat. It would help you a lot to understand how such things happen.

But the most important question for you to answer is why you think that somehow humans are not subject to the same process. Have you looked at the evidence? Have you seen the fossil skulls of our ancient ancestors? There's plenty of data - as much if not more than your mammoth or sabretooth.

Is it just pride that tells you that it couldn't happen to people?

An answer above mentions the fused chromosome 2 we have, that is clearly and plainly made up of two older chromosomes - ones that other apes still have separated. Looking at it in detail shows exactly where the join occurred, and even the inactivated centromeres that were once in the middle of the two old chromosomes.

This kind of genetic change happens regularly - if rarely - in nature. It proves beyond all reasonable doubt our full membership of the ape clade. Only ignorance and pride deny this fact.

CD
Reply:I realize you said you don't believe that we evolved from apes, I don't either, but use this as an analogy or to compare.

If we evolved from apes, why aren't we still evolving today. Why did we stop?

That kind of applies to the other animals.
Reply:You seem to have Evolution confused, We did not come from Apes but shared a common ancestor with them.

Try to study up more on the subject and take less into the stereotypes the church tries to feed you.

*Edit*

Ok if I ignore that last part you seem like a Christian who believes in evolution, there are plenty of people like that (including some friends of mine) so it's not a problem.
Reply:Intelligent design says that God ceated the universe with a plan that included evolution as his method of creating all life.

Some believe that man is included in this plan and others think tht man is special.

The only part of man that is in Gods image is our soul since God has no physical image. it is possible that our bodies evolved but our soul was created in Gods image.
Reply:FYI: The ToE does not say that we came from an ape. Humans and apes are primates...cousins...that took different evolutionary paths. Our brains got bigger and more complex, their bodies got bigger and more powerful.

You are describing a variant of "theistic evolution", menaing that evolution is a tool that God used (and presumably still uses) to shape life as we know it.
Reply:We share 98% of genes with apes. They are SO similar to us. I attended an evolution lab class that took us from each stage of our past (Homo Erectus, Homo Habilis, etc.) and how we changed. It made perfect sense with Darwinian evolution (i.e., with mutations and natural selection).

Evolution occured with every animal. It's an intrinsic property of life.
Reply:Do you believe that the Universe was created in 6 days?

If so, then how do you reconcile the mammoth, sabre tooth tiger, et al with that, considering they were not here at the same time as human beings?

Evolution does not state that man came from apes.. it says that we have a common ancestor.
Reply:Respectfully: you're hedging.

In fact the current species - including humans - descended from earlier species. This is so well-established that the only way to honestly deny it is to accept that your faith counters scientific knowledge. You do, in fact, have nonhuman ancestors: we all do.

The fact of evolution could be reconciled with a God who created the universe. However, the universe was not created in its current form, at least in the sense that God simply created the various species as they currently are. A creationism that claims that He did is simply wrong.

Thank you for asking this respectfully. You seem to have a good attitude about it, and a good chance of learning to accommodate your religious needs with the facts of the matter. That's an adult stance to take.

The question was asked, my friend had negative feedback, What is the immediate kill spot on a horse? So I ask.

To those who didnt understand or assume they know someone, this is for you...maybe it should have been a little more detailed. So allow me to educate you...Assuming a horse is in the wild by natures course is attack by a Lion, Tiger, or whatever...What would be the immediate kill spot on a horse? I have 4 horses and I'm a Farrier by Trade...a very knowledgeable one I might add...To all that answerd before, from what I read was the wrong answer. So lets try again...Any takers or should I be censored and have points deducted too. The question is only meant for people who strive to learn.

The question was asked, my friend had negative feedback, What is the immediate kill spot on a horse? So I ask.
Most predatory animals go for the spine...so....
Reply:if a horse is attacked in the wild I would think that a big cat (panther tiger etc.) would go for the throat.
Reply:god forbid this but it is the lower side of the throat, keep the animals safe
Reply:why do you need to now this is the something wroing with you horse the spot you r looking 4 is betwen the eyes i have had a poni so if i can help let me now
Reply:I know that on a deer it's directly behind the front leg (the heart). I'm not sure how closely horses and deer are built, but I'd imagine it'd be similar.
Reply:You mean kill spot that a predator would go for? If so, then its the jugular or esophagus, both are in the throat.

If you mean how would you kill a horse humanely that has been injured, imagine an x on its skull that connects its two eyes. Where the lines meet, shoot.
Reply:The carotid ARTERY in the jugular region. The veins and arteries are set up so veins lie closer to the surface of the skin because they don't carry the same volume of blood.

The spine is also a good place to attack because if hit in the correct spot nerves to the legs will be severely damaged.

I don't think death is immediate but it is imminent.

If you needed to kill a dying horse then between the eyes or to the heart but I don't think a predator would be able to get either of those accomplished easily.
Reply:as far as natural predator with horses is the back, but especially the neck-jugular vein.
Reply:ok here we go from what i have learnt as a vet nurse the kill spot would be if you drew a X between the eyes and ears of the horse wre it meets in the middle is i dirct kill spot ?? i tried to put a horse down myself but didnt have the courage to pull the trigger and got my boss out instead hope im right tell me if im right or wrong pls as it is a great question thats if to be done by human and in the wild the kills pot is the jugular in the throat
Reply:well your not a very knowledeable farrier if you dont know the immediate kill spot

Why does Johncenaboy ask so many question and has three profiles!?

He thinks the Siberian Tiger is the ultimate predator, but they are fat and can't fight.

http://www.lairweb.org.nz/tiger/conflict...

Quote

"Quite frequently the lion versus tiger question focuses on the Amur (Siberian) tiger. People mistakenly believe that the large size of the Amur tiger means a more aggressive animal and therefore a better fighter."

"The fact is, that when it comes to aggression, the Amur tiger lacks the ferocity of its cousin from the Asian sub-continent, which, in turn, lacks the ferocity of the lion by a significant margin."

"TheAmur tiger is slightly longer and somewhat heavier than the Bengal, the difference is less than popularly thought. Much of the Amur tiger's extra bulk is fat for warmth, and a false impression is also given by their thicker longer coat."

Lions can be more aggressive!

A 300 pound Tiger can be killed by a 250 pound Jaguar.

http://p083.ezboard.com/fsharks77551frm2...

Tigers lose!

Why does Johncenaboy ask so many question and has three profiles!?
personally I think he's older (not a kid) but I think he must have some kind of mental disorder that compels him to just ask the same thing over and over again. I see on one of his questions he makes the assertion that Johncena Boy (now called Rocky Balboa) and I Am A World Fighter (formerly Kenneth Lim) are two friends that both like tigers (although both appear to have exactly the same mental problems!). There are some further accounts of his too I believe. Its only a matter of time before he gets removed because so many people are getting sick of him. But of course he'll just come back with a new account! He is also very aggressive and abusive on occasion. It is irritating that newcomers to Answers respond to his questions because they think they are helping him out, whereas we in the know just mock his idiocy. Seriously I think he needs psychiatric help.

Also check this out too:

Reply:I think he has also been kenneth a and john b and kenneth lim and a few other profiles too. I thought he was just a cute little kid at first asking some innocent questions about tigers because he really likes tigers. But now I think he is a bit older than I thought. I was thinking 5 or 6 or something originally based on the horrendous spelling, inability to use spell check, and lack of skills to do the web searches himself. But more recently here I'm thinking a bit older than that perhaps. Easily 12, 13, or 16 I think now. He's actually been around for a year. I think he has answered one of his own questions and given it a thumbs up too.

The ultimate predator is the killer whale, there can be no question. 25% of blue whales have scars from killer whale attacks they somehow managed to survive and who knows how many didn't. Sperm whales can kill and eat giant squid, and that's very impressive, but a pod of killer whales is the ultimate carnivore and ultimate fighter. Not tigers. Maybe on land.

I have dreams for several years of being hunted by tigers and i always find safe ground yet i'm afraid, why?

i have viewed lion mauling videos before could that be the reason? if so how do i end the dreams?

I have dreams for several years of being hunted by tigers and i always find safe ground yet i'm afraid, why?
Recurrent dreams are our attempt to solve a problem that recurs too. Notice when you have the dream. What happened before it? Perhaps you have it only after being in a particular place or with a particular person. Who would you describe as a tiger that's in your life and scares you in some way?

In our dreams we tell ourselves stories, usually in metaphor, to come to some solution or a better emotional equilibrium with the events of our day. We are trying to resolve something and we have insights that are often not available to us in our waking lives.

What happened just preceeding this dream? What is/was in your life needs to be changed? Who/what does the tiger

represent in your life? You probably already know. The dream says you can handle it.

You are the final authority on what your dreams mean.
Reply:Tigers represent power. The fact that you always find safe ground in your dream indictates that this power is not beating you. Visualising a different ending to dreams can sometimes make the threat in the dream go away. When you are relaxed in bed, either before you go to sleep ,or when you wake from one of these dreams, concoiusly go back into the dream and change it to your advantage. For example you might decide to catch the tigers somehow and take them to somewhere they can't chase you any more. Just reminding yourself that you always get to a safe place should help you to relax and be able to conquer them. good luck.
Reply:i think the tigers might be symbolic of several things.

1. debt

2. family problems

3 work related problems

4. aggressive individuals in your life

5. relationship problems

when you find your safe ground it could be:

1. a place you find sanctuary in such as a church, your homes, somewhere peaceful, etc.

2. someone who cares about you

3. an object of comfort

even when you have found solace, you know that you have not solved your problems; even though you are on a safe ground, the tiger (your problems) still remain. You might want to find a way to overcome your problems but it requires that you identify that problem first.

As for the videos, don't worry about it. during the later part of my middle schoo years, I kept being bothered by dreams of vampires and sharks but they eventually went away. I preoccupied my sleep with other thoughts or just thought of ways to fight back in my dreams.

I thought that meeting outside of the species was impossible. But it's not? What about humans?

I found out that these are hybrid animals that result from the mating of two different species!

Ligers/Tigons (lion/tiger)

Mules (horse/donkey)

Zebroid is a Zebra mix.. Zorse (horse/zebra) Zonkey (zebra/donkey)

Cama (Camel/Llama)

I thought that mating outside of the species was impossible? What can a human mate with that's not human then to produce an offspring?

I thought that meeting outside of the species was impossible. But it's not? What about humans?
This is one of the steps of separation of species. For instance, lions and tigers live on different continents and have for a very long time. Their mutual ancestor was a single species, but even with the long separation in space and time, they are still in the process of forming completely separate species. They can still interbreed, but their offspring are sterile.

Compare this with domestic cows and buffalo and also domestic cows and yaks. They are considered separated species and the separation came a long time ago. But, they really aren't as separate as the species you mentioned. Cows and buffalo can produce fertile offspring. Cows and yaks can produce fertile female offspring but not fertile male offspring.

Identifying separate species is not as clear cut as it might seem and many that have been identified as separate turn out not to be. Most of us consider wolves and dogs as separate species, but of course, they are perfectly capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.

There is no known animal that humans can mate with and produce offspring. Chimps and bonobos are the closest living relative, but that was tried in Russia quite a few years ago and it didn't work. If Neaderthals were still around it is likely humans could successfully mated with them. Unknown whether that cross would have produced fertile or sterile offspring.
Reply:All of those pairs are of the same species.
Reply:They can't reproduce so they are not considered a different species. A species needs to be able to reproduce. Not one of these animals can reproduce. Humans can't mate with anything except a human. You need to be able to reproduce and contribute to the gene pool to be classified a species.
Reply:Close species can be crossed to create offspring, but offspring of the crossing of 2 species can not reproduce.

ie a lion and a tiger produce a liger, but ligers can't reproduce.
Reply:Part of your problem, and that of people answering, is the definition of species which depends on either non-reproduction or reproduction to produce sterile offspring. This holds for many living animals but not for fishes. Some minnows of different genera can hybridize to produce offspring that are not only fertile with themselves but fertile with both parent species.

Your question about humans is also difficult to answer because of how we define species. There is a great deal of emotion involved in determination of species and subspecies of humanoids. My best guess (and that is all it is) is that Cro-magnon man (Homo sapiens) interbred with Homo neanderthalensis when they weren't killing one another and that some of the traits associated with the latter persist today. So far as I know, humans cannot produce viable offspring with any animal alive today, except for other humans.
Reply:Those animals you listed are different species, but they are in the same genus or family group (lions and tigers are both in the family Felidae, for example). The more closely related the animals, the more likely you are to be able to interbreed them. Species differentiation came about in some of these animals due to reproductive isolation from one another -- tigers went to Asia and lions went to Africa, but they started out near each other before diverging.

By the way, people breed different species of dogs all the time -- a lab and a poodle for example. And those animals are usually reproductively viable (can have offspring). Also, there is actually a non-sterile mule in Mexico -- guess no one mentioned to the mule that it's not supposed to be able to breed!

As for humans, so far no one has successfully interbred anything with a human. Why would you even want to??
Reply:Some species are compatible enough to produce non fertile offspring.

However, the human genes don't match up with any other species so we can't. Our nearest relatives have a different chromosome count so we can't breed.
Reply:It is possible, but even if viable hybrids are produced (hybrids that survive), they are sterile. Another factor is that these animals would never or almost never mate under natural conditions, so there's a pre-zygotic barrier as well.
Reply:two closely related species can breed and produce a hybrid offspring, as in the examples you've mentioned. But the reply that said "people breed different species of dogs all the time -- a lab and a poodle for example." is incorrect, because the term "species" is not the same as "breed", Labradors and poodles are the same species, Canis familiaris; Shire horses and Shetland ponies are the same species, Equus caballus; they are only races or breeds of those species, and can interbreed and produce viable offspring.

Homo sapiens is a species (with lots of races!) and there isn't anything else genetically close enough to interbreed to produce a hybrid.
Reply:Humans could have probably reproduced with other human-like species in the same family, such as Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon Man, etc. But these species are all gone so we're just gonna have to stick to other humans.

Who would win a fight between a Velociraptor a tiger/lion/saber tooth?

Who would win? If you watched jurassic park before, keep in mind that an average Velociraptor is actually half the size of those seen in the movie, so a Velociraptor is actually smaller and lighter than any of those big cats. Who would win in a fight? Who's faster and who's stronger?

Who would win a fight between a Velociraptor a tiger/lion/saber tooth?
The cat. What most people forget is that lizards and such are cold-blooded; they have a low energy level, tire rapidly and their synapses to not fire as rapidly (muscle cells and how they use energy, basically).

Size is not the only factor; saber-toothed tigers brought down wooly mammouths.
Reply:Sabertooth, Tiger, Lion and Raptor in that order. Raptors typically hunted in packs, each one alone is actually not that capable. Sabre tooth is the biggest, tiger is next most aggresive, lions are bigger than raptors.
Reply:MR Saber FOR SURE!!!
Reply:Sabertooth....it's been proven.

Why? Well because they actually had 6 fangs...............not too many people know this.......................................

That's tough. I think all the big cats are awesome in their own right. The Male Lion is the fierce looking cat. The Tiger the most beautiful. The Black Panther the most mysterious. The cheetah the coolest to watch run.

Which animal was a fear animal in this world? tiger, lion, leopard, etc.?

If you mean which one of them is the most feared then I would believe that a lion is not only the most feared but the most popular animal. Lions have killed many people before so that would give reason to be afraid of them. Lions are majestic creatures which should be feared

Which animal was a fear animal in this world? tiger, lion, leopard, etc.?
Such a travesty. U can't answer a question this stupid. Report It

Reply:Do you mean: Which animal was a feared animal in this world? I would say all of those that you have listed. They will forever be loved from a distance.
Reply:this question makes no sense
Reply:OK I'm having a little trouble understanding your Q, but I'll attempt to answer it.

If you meant which animal uses fear as a tactic then I would say the lion since both the leopard and the tiger are loners.

If you're looking for "fearsome" animals then I would add the Hippo to your list since they kill more people in Africa than any other animal. You could also add the Jaguar and Hyena as well as the Crocodile.

OK I'm not sure if that answers your Q or if that even comes close. If it doesn't answer it then perhaps you should rephrase the Q.

What kind of exotic cat should i get example tiger, lion, jaguar, cheetah?

i have a farm that houses exotic african and south american mammals i want to get some kind of cat so what will it be?????????

What kind of exotic cat should i get example tiger, lion, jaguar, cheetah?
Exotic cats are NOT good pets. Most people buy them because they are beautiful, but they need to consume LARGE, EXPENSIVE quantities of meat. Most of these animals end up abandoned to zoos, who often haven't the room to keep them. If they are not lucky enough to be accepted by the few sanctuaries that provide for these abandoned animals, they are euthanized. The large cats are also endangered, esp. the American couger, and cannot be wasted on a humans animal collection.

I also have large acreage, and love exotic animals, ex. peacocks swans and wallabies. They are NOT kept in cages all of their lives. You would HAVE to keep a large cat confined. If they got out and killed livestock, or a human, the law would shoot them. You would be personally liable fortheir camage and could face time in prison.

Tippi Hedren, mother of Melanie Griffith, a movie star, kept a male lion as a pet when Melanie was a child. It was tame, and well-confined, but a large flood came and the lion was freed. The lion was scared, naturally, and the neighbors felt threatened. The police were forced by law to empty all their pistols, shotguns and rifles into the animal, which was killed in front of the children. She is now the owner of a large habitat for big cats in California, called Shambala, which cares for abandoned big cats, and there are more abandoned cats than she can keep. This is true and verifyable information. See www.shambala.org for more information.

By purchasing an exotic cat, you encourage a trade that is cruel, and unregulated. There is a Federal law, The Captive Wildlife Safety Act, H.R. 1006, passed the House Committee on Resources in July, after Tippi and others testified in Washington in favor of the bill at a committee hearing on June 12. It passed the full House on November 19, 2003. As S. 269, it UNANIMOUSLY passed the Senate on October 31, 2003. And it was signed into LAW on December 19, 2003 by President George W. Bush!!!

The law was passed after a sad, but common accident. "Just one week after the tragic death of a 10-year-old North Carolina boy, who was mauled by his aunt's 400-pound pet tiger, President George W. Bush, on December 19th signed into law the Captive Wildlife Safety Act, a new federal law to outlaw the interstate transport of big cats for the pet trade. Tippi played a critical role in its introduction and final enactment, and at phases in between. It's a measure that should dramatically combat the alarmingly widespread problem of private citizens keeping the great cats in backyards, basements, and even closets." see www.shambala.org.

As a cat lover for many years, and a person who has the money and space to do what you are considering, I understand your desire to have a big cat. They are awesome! I understand that you believe you can keep them well. But, if you truly love them, your money would be better spent trying to preserve their habitats in the wild. NONE of the cats you mentioned should be caged or confined. They are all on the endangered or threatened species list. PLEASE, do not do this.

If you must, please do not buy the cat from an exotic pet trader. Contact the American Humane Society, and take a cat whose owners have abandoned it.

Who would win in a REAL cat fight, tiger vs. lion?

as a person who is fascinated with big cats, i am just curious to see if the lion would hold his title as "king of the beast" if he came across a bigger, stronger, and faster cat, the tiger. In nature the two giant felines live in different geographic areas so their paths are not likely to cross. ideas?

Who would win in a REAL cat fight, tiger vs. lion?
The Lion (Panthera leo) is a mammal of the family Felidae. It is the second largest natural living feline with the exception of the tiger. The male lion, easily recognized by his mane, weighs between 150 and 190 kg (330 lb and 423 lb). Unlike tigers, very few lions exceed 225kg in the wild. The greatest wild lion on record is very large male with a weight of 311kg. Females are much smaller, weighing between 117 and 158 kg (240 lb and 330 lb). In the wild lions live for around 10–14 years, while in captivity they can live over 20 years.

Tigers (Latin: Panthera tigris) are mammals of the Felidae family and one of four "big cats" in the panthera genus. They are predatory carnivores and the largest and most powerful of all living cat species. The Indian subcontinent is home to more than 80% of the wild tigers in the world. Tigers breed well in captivity, and the captive population in the United States may rival the wild population of the world.

Most tigers live in forests and grasslands, for which their camouflage is ideally suited, and where it is easy to hunt prey that is faster or more agile. Among the big cats, only the tiger and jaguar are strong swimmers; tigers are often found bathing in ponds, lakes, and rivers. Tigers hunt alone and eat primarily medium-sized herbivores such as deer, wild pigs, and buffalo. However, they will also take larger or smaller prey on occasion. Humans are the tiger's only serious predator and often kill tigers illegally for their fur. Their bones and nearly all body parts are used in Chinese medicine for a range of purported uses including pain killers and aphrodisiacs. Poaching for fur and destruction of habitat have greatly reduced tiger populations in the wild, and it has been placed on the endangered species list.

Although different subspecies of tiger have different characteristics, in general male tigers weigh between 180 and 325 kg (400 lb and 715 lb) and females between 100 and 180 kg (220 lb and 400 lb). The males are between 2.6 and 3.3 metres (8 ft 6 in and 10 ft 9 in) in length, and the females are between 2.3 and 2.75 metres (7 ft 6 in and 9 ft) in length. Of the living subspecies, Sumatran tigers are the smallest, and Amur or Siberian Tigers are generally the largest.

Tigers have the longest and biggest canine teeth of all the wild cats. A tiger's canines are larger and longer than those of a similar-sized lion. The reason for this is likely due to the habit of preying on large herbivores in its habitat whose bones are thick and large; the tiger's canines have to be strong enough to break the bones of their prey. Moreover, as tigers hunt alone to bring down their prey, they have to work harder than lions, which hunt in groups.

igers often ambush their prey as do other cats (including the domestic cat). Tigers overpower their prey from any angle, using their body size and strength to knock prey off balance. Once prone, the tiger bites the back of the neck, often breaking the prey's spinal column, piercing their windpipe, or severing the jugular vein or carotid artery. For large prey, a bite to the throat is preferred. After biting, the tiger then uses its muscled forelimbs to hold onto the prey, bringing it to the ground. The tiger remains latched onto the neck until its prey dies.

Powerful swimmers, tigers are known to kill prey while swimming. Some tigers have even ambushed boats for the fishermen on board or their catch of fish.

In the wild world, tigers can leap as high as 5 m, and as far as 9 m -10 m, making them one of the highest-jumping mammals, perhaps second only to the puma. They have been reported to carry domestic livestock weighing 50 kg while easily jumping over fences 2 m high. Their forelimbs, heavily muscled, are used to hold tightly onto the prey's and avoid being dislodged, especially by large preys such as gaurs. A single tremendous blow of the paw can kill a full-grown wolf or heavily injure a 150 kg Sambar deer.

One common misunderstanding between lion and tiger needs to be corrected: Some people believe that tigers are built for hunting, while lions are for combating (e.g. defending their prides from intruders, fighting to gain posession of females), and tigers do not fight to the end. In reality, male tigers do have to fight to defend their ranges from intruders, as intruding males will try and kill their offspring, and gain access to females. Male tigers are very aggressive and do not tolerate any kind of territory overlapping. Sometimes the fights get so fierce the losers are dead or heavily injured, making them unable to catch their normal prey and starve. This contributes to the fact that wild tigers do not live as long as they do in zoos.

In the wild tigers mostly feed on deer, wild boar and wild cattle, including gaur and water buffaloes, young rhinos and elephants, and sometimes, leopards and bears. Sambar and wild boar are their favored preys in India. Young elephants are another of their favourite food items. However, as young calves and juveniles always travel in herds with their mothers and relatives, the possibility for a lone tiger to catch a young elephant is quite low, as the tiger usually have to deal with the calves' protectors, which outnumber it. Tigers prefer large preys such as sambar and gaur because they provide more meat and last for many days, avoiding the need for another hunt. In all of their range, tigers are the top predators and they do not fear from any other carnivores other than the dhole or Indian wild dog, which makes up for strength in numbers. They generally do not prey on large mammals such as elephants, and rhinos, although they will prey on weak young whenever they have an opportunity. However, a hungry tiger will attack anything it regards as potential food. Of all the land carnivores, tiger is the only species that has been known to charge and take down even full-grown male elephants, one-on-one. For centuries in Asia, especially in Indochina, where elephants used to be utilized in military as weapons, minor ethnic tribes, who are specialized in capturing and training elephants, have the traditions of testing captured male elephants by pressing one against a tiger. If an elephant survives the fight, it is considered ideal for battles. Today, however, due to the depletion of both species, these extraordinary confrontations become exceedingly rare and are hardly ever witnessed by humans in the wild.

I think I would put my money on the tiger!

Reply:When the British were in charge of India, they used to have bull bating, lion bating and tiger bating, using Bull Terriers and British Bull Dogs. To make the fights 'even' they would use 3 Bull Terriers per lion, and 6 Bull Terriers for Tigers. They would also put lions and tigers together, after starving them for a while to make them hungry enough to ensure they would fight. To make the fights fair, they would put two lions in witn one tiger. With this evidence, I would suggest that Tigers would usually win when pitted with one Lion.
Reply:the tiger would win, the lions only front half of the body is strong , the tiger is evenly and strongly balanced from head to tail
Reply:Given they are in the same age, lion wins any time. Lion is a much bigger and stronger cats. Once Lion finds tigers and its cuffs, Lion will kill all of them. The mother tiger usually runs away for its life. Can't protect her young against lion, who kills just to eliminate competitor in foods.
