Despite being domesticated, cats still like to hunt for other animals for their meat sources which is natural,

however dogs don't hunt down other animals for their meat sources? How is it that cats still have their prehistoric ancesters hunting skills but not dogs?

Dogs are similiar to wolves, coyotes, and foxes just like cats are similiar to tigers, lions, leopards, cheetahs, panthers, lynx, cougars and wild cats.

it all depends on the type of dog/and cat and if they were trained to do so. for example if you raise a cat from birth to be an indoor cat so all it does is basically sleep and eat if it goes outside it wont know how to survive. the same occurs with dogs if they were raised as a baby that thats how they can survive. its hard to explain, there are many variables.
Reply:A dog has to have the taste of blood before it will hunt instinctively.

That being said, the Caca-Poo (cocker spaniel mom - dad was a cocker spaniel and poodle) we had while growing up in the countryside would catch and kill every mouse she saw in the feed bin. She never ate the mice...just caught 'em and killed 'em.

Reply:Because cats rule.

Stray dogs will hunt, but domesticated ones just dont...they do in play though---domesticated cats hunt, but usually they dont eat their kill. Since they are fed, they bring the kill to their owner as a gift. I guess they suspect us to eat it.
Reply:The dogs I have will hunt if given the opportunity, they'll even hunt the family cat. I had a dog that was as effective at capturing and killing birds as any cat I've know, had to keep a close eye on her when I took her out for that reason.

One reason it may seem that way to you is that cats are more effective at hunting alone and at hunting smaller and faster prey, so they're more successful in an urban setting where mice and other rodents make up most of the prey. Dogs would be better suited for pack hunting of larger animals, and there aren't many opportunites for that in an urban setting.

Also, in my experience dogs are a lot more likely to actually eat carrion or any source of meat for that matter than a domestic cat.
Reply:Cats don't do a darn thing you tell them.

They have a different warped mind.

I know my Russian Blue does.
