What mythological/fantasy creature is the greatest.?

Have a favorite mythological beast? Winged fantasy creature?

Post your favorite, with a descriptive reason why it is your favorite fantasy creature.

(Please no real animals such as penguins, squirrels, lions, tigers, bears.......dogs, cats, etc. Only animals of legend, myth, cultural lore.)

What mythological/fantasy creature is the greatest.?
the monkey king from ramayana... he's a monkey king, how much more descriptive can you get than that? i mean seriously, that has to be the coolest king ever... well, i think it would be cool to have a monkey for a king anyways...

p.s. ravana the ten-headed demon was kinda cool too but he's too evil to be considered the greatest....
Reply:thunder bird -- Native American Mythology as this bird brings life giving rain to The People and their crops in order for them to survive
Reply:WELL I THINK THAT DRACULA WAS THE GREATEST BUT THATS MY OPINION
Reply:Mine is mermaids. Ever since I was a little girl my father would take me fishing and tell me mermaid stories, he even took me to Blue Lagoon once. And then the Little Mermaid came out in movies! It was amazing, and as immature as it may be still one of my favorite movies!! They are just beautiful, and mysterious, and live in a world underwater!
Reply:My favorite mythological creature is the unicorn. A beautiful creature that resembles a normal horse but is so much more. A creature of the light that is so pure it is a sin in most mythology to kill or even touch one. Definitely my favorite creature.
Reply:I am partial to both Griffins and Phoenix's.

I like the Griffin because they are a composite of lions and eagles, with the combined associations of power, wisdom and flight.

I like the phoenix because of its fiery beauty and it's ability to regenerate itself despite how destructive it could be.

I wish I could create a creature with the abilitys of both, and call it a Grenix; a mythological fire creature who appears with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. A beast of both fire and air, its outstretched wings radiate and/or capture the sun's energy, distributing it in it's flight. Because of radiation, after 500 years, it finds a mate and together they fly towards the sun, the combined energy creating two eggs in the females body (one male and one female), while at the same time forcing a critical mass that consumes their bodies, providing the intense heat to nurture the eggs into hatching. The hatchlings are subsequently nurtured into maturity by the sun's energy, and then fly off as adults until, they too, reach old age, at which point the cycle begins all over again.
Reply:A Dragon.

Why i feel a Dragon is the greatest mythological creature.

well because i feel it has made its mark on the world not only in the western culture with knights blazing to attack and kill it.

But more so with the Eastern culture. where the dragon is endeared respected, called upon for protection and wealth.

They worship the dragon rather than condemn it.

Dragon Boat races, the Chinese new year. within there zodiac.

I personally feel dragons are still with us on another dimension to our physical world. much like angels and ghosts. etc.

You can still call on these creatures.

That is why i love them so .. as i feel they are around me. still today.
Reply:mmmmmm......let me think....................

Yeah.....it would definately have to be MEDUSSA. She scared the crap out of me but also gave a thrill at the same time. Remember her in that film about 25yrs ago?...cant think of the name of it...
Reply:Gryphons. And that's my favorite way to spell it too.
Reply:Uhh the penguin with wings.
Reply:Pegasus is my favourite mythological creature, because it's a horse ( I lover horses), it's white ( which is my favorite color), it has wings (I love winged creatures), it has a horn on his forehead (just like unicorns, creatures I adore too), and was given from Zeus to Hercules.
Reply:The hydra. Lop off one of its heads and two grow back in its place.
Reply:The mythical creature that I'm most impressed with is the famed "Wife who likes to have Sex". I myself have never found it, but I've heard of a few guys who can vouch for it.
Reply:i like all of em but my favorite has to the dragon there so kool
Reply:My fav are dragons. I've always been drawn to them and I have a large collection of them. To me, they are the most powerful and grand creatures of them all. Plus I was born in the year of the dragon...lol.
Reply:I always liked mermaids because they're so mysterious, but I think the unicorn is my all-around favorite.

Why? Well, depending on the source you read, they're good, strong, beautiful, powerful, aloof, mysterious, and of course very magical.
Reply:In terms of grandeur, you must go for dragons.

And there is all kinds of dragons to go.

They were once the symbol of the devouring vastness of a seemingly endless world, from there the frase "from here be dragons" in the border of maps.

Other grand mythological creature is the Leviathan and the Behemoth, both so big that there could be only one in the world or it could not endure them. See also the Ziz.

And of course, if you go for Cthulhu mithos, you can find unspeakable horrors colossal like planets. Remember when profitting from chaos, don't forget to pray to Niharlatothep. ;)

The "favorite creature" question is very, very usual, good thing that you asked for the greatest.
Reply:Dragons by far! They represent, to me.....magic, power, strength, beauty, and wisdom.

Others can be evil and ugly but I like most dragons.

I have a collection of dragons and a few unicorns plus 2 dragon tattoos. They are pretty =) I love them.
Reply:Seeing how Krakens are real creatures, I'd have to say Lycans (werewolves).
