saturating malarial areas with
pesticide. Any scheme to destroy a species just because it is an enemy must be resisted. There
are many species of animals and insects which have the capacity to harm or kill humans - for
example, spiders, scorpions, sharks, crocodiles, lions, tigers, piranhas. If we destroy all of them,
we will forever damage the ecosystem upon which we all rely.
Which of the following is an expression of the conclusion of the above argument?
A We should not try to wipe out mosquitoes.
B Any scheme to destroy a species should be opposed.
C Many species have the capacity to harm or kill humans.
D We should not act in ways which will damage the ecosystem.
E We should not regard mosquitoes as the natural enemies of mankind.
Would be wrong to wipe out mosquitoes, for example by?
Justification
The key is A.
The argument makes the general point that we should not destroy species just because they are
enemies, and gives examples. It supports this intermediate conclusion by claiming that destroying
such species would harm the environment we all rely on. From this reasoning, the first sentence –
that it would be wrong to wipe out mosquitoes – follows as a further instance. A identifies this
conclusion.
Distractors
B This is the intermediate conclusion.
C This is a supporting reason.
D This is a supporting reason.
E This contradicts the implied claim that mosquitoes are natural enemies
Reply:A. We should not try to wipe out mosquitoes.
Malaria kills about 2 million people annually. There are other ways of preventing the spread of Malaria, so that it can be eliminated in the population. The barrier method, by sleeping under netting, will prevent the transmission of Malaria. This could be achieved in a single mosquito breeding season if no-one got bitten, and everyone with Malaria got treatment. Not feasible but not impossible. Killing the mosquito involves killing a lot of other water living and air-borne insect life, and everything up the food chain from it.
Reply:D. They may be pesky and annoying, they're really bad here in Minnesota. They serve a purpose in some way though.

What kind of question is this? The mosquito may be a bothersome to people, but it also a food source to many others.
Did you know that when a baby duck is first born it depends on finding the larvae of the mosquito for food. They depend on this food source. It has always been there. T
The right thing to do is to bring in the enemy of the mosquito...the dragonfly, the bat, the Martins (birds).
Why would some stupid person go around spraying pesticides that not only kill the mosquito, but also the enviroment? Now, they are messing with the water since the pesticides not only kill the mosquito but gets left on the leaves of the bushes. The rain comes and washes those pesticides into the water of a river. The river runs down and gets caught in a plant where it to be said 'refined'.
It's a messed up process.
Oh wait.....I had to pick one??
I would have to pick
C. - Many species have the capacity to harm or kill humans.
The rest are human stupidity.
Reply:D, that best sums it up.
Reply:I would say A
